Victorian Britain was a place of fast-paced reform and innovation. In 1840, one such reform was to change lives forever – the introduction of the World’s first postage stamp, the Penny Black.

To celebrate its 175th anniversary, this exhibition tells the story of the creation of the Penny Black and its phenomenal social impact. On display will be an original sheet of the iconic Penny Blacks, offering a rare opportunity to view this stand-out object up close.

Open Day at the Royal Philatelic Society London

Thursday 14th May 1100 – 1600

The Royal Philatelic Society London will have an open day in their premises at 41 Devonshire Place, London W1G 6YJ (nearest tube stations are Regents Park and Baker Street on the Bakerloo line), from 11am until 4pm on Thursday 14th May 2015, during London 2015 Europhilex. Everyone is welcome whether or not they are members.

There will be displays from the Society’s collections and from members who joined since the last London International in 2010. Items from the Royal’s museum, archive and historic library books and magazines will be on display. There will be regular tours of the building and its facilities throughout the day, including the expertising facilities, and cream teas will be served.

It is hoped that members from abroad and the UK who have not visited the premises before will take this opportunity to have a look around. Those that are not members are also most welcome and we will be happy to discuss possible membership with anyone that is interested. Membership of The Royal Philatelic Society London is open to anyone with an interest in philately irrespective of their collecting level. There is no need to book. Just turn up.
